Charles Lynwood Shieder Obituary

Charles Lynwood Shieder, 78, of Saint George, SC, beloved husband of Lucy Evonne “Vonnie” Doyle Shieder, passed away at his home on January 9, 2025.  Lynwood was born in Grover, SC on October 22, 1946, to Herman Willard Shieder and Bessie Evelyn Hutto Shieder.  He was a 1964 graduate of Saint George High School.

He began courting the love of his life in April 1971 and proposed a mere three weeks after they began dating.  They were wed in November 1971, after a 4-month engagement, and spent 53 years happily married.  They welcomed the births of their three children; two daughters, Brandyn Evonne Shieder Kirkland and Tiffany Lyn Shieder, and a son, Chase Lynwood Shieder.  Lynwood was a wonderful husband and father, who always told his wife and children how much he loved them.

Lynwood spent his career as an electrician.  He was a federal civilian employee, first of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, then the Polaris Missile Facility Atlantic (POMFLANT).  He retired from Dorchester County Public Works.

Lynwood was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his younger days duck and dove hunting.  He also loved to fish and amassed a large collection of vintage fishing plugs.  But most of all, he loved walking freshly plowed local fields in search of arrowheads and pottery with his brother, James, and their friend, Keith Riley.  He was a man who could fix or build anything, even building their family home himself.  He loved tinkering in his workshop, affectionately known as “The Barn”.

It is commonly agreed that Lynwood was well-liked by all who knew him.  He was a kind and quiet man who would always help a friend in need.

Lynwood was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James W. Shieder.  He is survived by his wife, Vonnie Shieder; children, Brandy Shieder Kirkland (Charles), Tiffany Shieder, and Chase Shieder (Rudy Bertile); and grandchildren, Alex Kirkland and Jillian Kirkland.  He is also survived by five special nieces (whom he loved as daughters); many grand-nieces and nephews; loving sisters-in-law, Mevelyn Fraser Shieder and Nancy Doyle Kirby; and brother-in-law, Joe Kirby.

There will be no services at this time, with a private ceremony at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Lynwood’s memory to Dorchester Paws Animal Shelter, 136 Four Paws Lane, Summerville, SC, 29483.  Though he would be surprised to admit it, his and Vonnie’s feline companions have brought them many years of joy.
