Jill Hughes Reeves passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2026, surrounded by her family. Jill was born on June 11, 1965, in Summerville, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Johnnie Raymond and Joan Hughes. She grew up in Summerville, SC, where she graduated from Summerville high school in 1983. Jill earned her Bachelor of Science from the College of Science and Mathematics from the University of South Carolina with the pursuit of teaching high school mathematics. In 1990, Jill married Gregory William Reeves, of Reevesville, SC. Jill and Greg made their home in St. George where they raised children Taylor Cassidy (1993) and their twins Matthew William and Madison Paige (1997).
For more than 30 years, Jill taught math and engineering courses at Summerville High School. Along the way, she earned her master’s degree and the distinction of being Nationally Board Certified. In 2017, Jill retired and acquired a passion for tennis. Jill was a part of the St. George Tennis Women’s +40 League, St. George Women’s Combo League, St. George Tennis Mixed Doubles +40 and +55 League, Walterboro Women’s +55 League. She served on the Board for the St. George Youth Sports League, holding the office of Secretary and was instrumental in forming the St. George women’s tennis league. Off of the courts, Jill was generous with her new-found free time and was frequently seen shuttling family and friends to appointments and participating in community and church outreach events.
As a member of Reevesville Baptist Church, Jill served as Sunday School director, taught adult Sunday School, worked with Vacation Bible School, and served on numerous committees. Her life passion was teaching. While actively teaching and into retirement, Jill tutored students, supported student-lead organizations, coached softball and was the on-call math expert to family members and friends. On more leisurely days, she could be found at her family’s lake house in Summerton, where she meticulously tended to her garden. Jill and Greg were generous hosts, opening their lake house and home to family and friends for holidays, special events and just hanging out. Some of Jill’s fondest memories were made along the lazy waters of Lake Marion.
Jill is survived by her husband; daughters Taylor Cassidy Reeves of Charleston and Madison Reeves Currie (Justin) of Manning; son Matthew William Reeves (Tyler Hill) of Royal Oak, MI; sisters Gale Hughes and Janet McDuff (Brian); brothers Tim Hughes and Todd Hughes (Beth); mother-in-law Peggy Reeves; sister-in-law Becky Proctor; brothers-in-law Jeff Reeves (Lynne’) and Kevin Reeves (Tracy); many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her devoted Golden Doodle companion and best friend, Remington.
A memorial service will be held on June 7, 2026 at Cattle Creek Plantation, Reevesville, SC, at 1:00 pm. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 am until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (www.nationalbreastcancer.org) or to Reevesville Baptist Church (400 Rigby Street, Reevesville, SC 29471).
The family wishes to thank Crescent Hospice of Charleston, their church family, friends, and the community for their love and support. A special thank you to Regina Moore for her care for Jill and the family.
