John "Johnny" Manning Weathers Obituary

John Manning “Johnny” Weathers, 76 husband of Gale Mewborne Weathers, entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 23, 2024.


Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 28, 2024, at St. George Methodist Church with Reverend Joey McDonald officiating.  Burial will follow in the Duncan Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Julius P. Thompson, IV,  Manning Weathers Thompson, William L. Thompson, Timmy Judy, Joe Johnston, Jackie Herndon and Chuck Cuttino. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men’s Senior Golf Group.


Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.


Johnny was born on September 5, 1948, in Orangeburg, SC, a son of the late Franklin Manning Weathers and Star Amanda Bardin Weathers.  He was a 1966 graduate of St. George High School and 1970 graduate of Baptist College.


Johnny taught 8th grade math at Williams Memorial Middle School. He was the Assistant Principal at St. George High School and Woodland High School. He coached football, girls’ JV basketball and softball teams.


He was a member of the St. George Methodist Church, Methodist Men’s group and was the designer and builder of the Manger scene. He was an avid golfer and charter member of the St. George Country Club. He was an active member of the Jaycees for years, served in the Army National Guard and was a volunteer firefighter.


Johnny loved attending and supporting his grandsons in their athletic events as well as hunting with them. . He enjoyed working in his garden.


Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Gale M. Weathers, St. George; a daughter, Amanda Jane “Mandi” W. (Pinckney) Thompson, Holly Hill; a son, Henry Daniel (Sara) Sandel, Annapolis, Maryland; grandchildren, Julius, Manning and William Thompson, Carrie Grace and Abigale Sandel, Lila, Emmy, Will, Declan Sandel; great-grandchild, Wells Sandel; special double first cousins, Jennifer Weathers (Joe) Williams and Bert (Jodi) Weathers; sister-in-law, Jane M. (Frank) Limehouse; brother-in-law, James Michael (Sally) Mewborne, Jr.; three nephews and a niece.


He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Robert H. Sandel.
