Lillie DeWitt Gurganus Obituary

Lillie Inabinet DeWitt Gurganus, widow of Jesse A. Gurganus, Jr., of Bowman, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at her residence.


Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, 607 North Parler Avenue, St. George.  Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until the time of service.  Pallbearers will be Alvin Lunsford, Trey Weathers, Ben Pope, Drew Darden, Adam Canady, David Gurganus, Jake Gurganus and Josh Pope. Burial will follow in the Bowman Cemetery.   


Lillie was born on May 30, 1936, in Bowman, a daughter of the late Connor and Maggie Lou DeWitt.  She was a registered nurse and a proud military wife.  She graduated from Bowman High School and Orangeburg School of Nursing.  She retired from the VA Hospital and the Orangeburg County Health Department.  She worked in Savannah, Montana, Orangeburg and Charleston.  She loved reading, gardening, singing, playing the piano and being with her family.  She loved painting and sharing her artwork.  She was a loving wife and mother.  She was predeceased by her daughter, Angela Gurganus; a son, David Gurganus; siblings, Will Shuler, Herbert DeWitt, Minnie Platz, Margaret Whetsell, Jimmy DeWitt and Richard DeWitt.  


Surviving are her children, Connie (Carlyse) Darden, Sallie (Randy) Pope, Jesse “Al” (Lisa) Gurganus, III; daughter-in-law, Anna Price; grandchildren, Jessica (Adam) Canady, Drew (Amanda) Darden, Josh (Rachael) Pope, Chelsea (Brian) Burbick, Ben (Christy) Pope,  David (Kelly) Gurganus, Jake (Morgan) Gurganus, David (Sumitra) Thieker; and 10 great-grandchildren, Lily and Josh Canady, Allie Darden, Lincoln Pope, Kennedy and William Burbick, Caroline Pope, Bryce and Callie Gurganus, Surya Thieker.  


Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Methodist Church, Stacy Weathers, 1877 Duncan Chapel Road, Bowman, SC 29018.
