Mildred Dew Gruber, 93, Beloved Matriarch and Friend
Mildred Dew Gruber, aged 93, passed away peacefully at her home on October 19, 2025, with family by her side. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and grace. Born on May 15, 1932, Mildred touched the hearts of many throughout her long and meaningful life with her warmth and wisdom.
After her husband, Wilson Birnell Gruber, returned from service in World War II, the couple began building a life together rooted in hard work and devotion. Over time, they purchased land and established Gruber Farms, where they farmed side by side for many years, cultivating not only field crops and produce for farmers’ markets, but also a deep bond and a strong family foundation. Mildred continued to care for their land and home with pride, especially her beautifully groomed yard, which reflected her love of gardening and nature.
She was a lifelong member of St. Matthews Baptist Church, where her faith and fellowship were central to her life. She was also a long-standing member of the Rose Garden Club, where she shared her passion for flowers and landscaping with fellow enthusiasts and contributed to the beautification of her community. She was instrumental in the founding and early development of Dorchester Academy, dedicating her time and vision to its growth and athletics.
Mildred is survived by her two sons, Wilson Stanley Gruber (Connie) and Richard Wayne Gruber, and her daughter Susan Gruber Kirlin (Mike). She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Sue Gruber Ellington, her sister-in-law Judy Gruber, eight grandchildren, Kimberly Griffin, Lynn Ruth (Aaron), Autumn Follett (Chad), Ashton Brantley (Luke), Kaylyn Gruber (Andrew), Morgan Gruber, Jack Kirlin (Donna), James Kirlin (Heather) fourteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilson Birnell Gruber, and her son Steven William Gruber.
Known for her gentle spirit and unwavering devotion to her family, Mildred was a source of strength and kindness to all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she nurtured, the land she tended, and the love she gave so freely.
