Robert Lee Baird Obituary
Robert Lee Baird, known lovingly as “Robby,” passed away on March 13, 2026 in Summerville, South Carolina after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 18, 1948, in New York, New York, to the late Robert Edward Baird and Peggy Bradley Baird, Robby lived a life defined by determination, service, and an unwavering love for the people around him.
Growing up through challenging times, Robby became the first Baird child to graduate high school. After fielding numerous collegiate offers for his athletic prowess, he accepted a full football scholarship to play quarterback for the University of Tennessee at Martin. While there, he was a part of the Tangerine Bowl Championship team, the only team in the history of the university that participated in a bowl game. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from UTM and enrolled in the ROTC program, which launched a distinguished military career. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in the reserves after serving overseas in Germany and many additional years of reserve service. Following his time abroad, he completed his master’s degree from the University of South Carolina while working full time as a probation officer for the state of South Carolina. After earning his master’s, he served as a federal probation officer until his retirement at the age of 50. In all of his endeavors, he excelled and received numerous commendations.
Robby was known for his outgoing, warm personality. He never met a stranger and was a master of giving nicknames that stuck for life. His Saturdays were spent cheering on the Tennessee Vols and the South Carolina Gamecocks, and he loved cooking and grilling for the gatherings that celebrated those games. He was even known to break out his outstanding shag moves after the games when they were victorious. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished being in nature and on the water with friends and family. Being a lifetime member at the Riverside Hunting club, he loved his time in the “swamp.” His real passion, though, was his family, especially his grandchildren. He cherished those “grandbabies” and loved spoiling them every chance he got.
Robby was a devoted member of the First Harleyville Methodist Church. His deep faith came early in life through his beloved mother, Peggy and was strengthened later in life by his cherished wife, Cheryl. Both set shining examples of dedication and faith in the Lord, and Robby carried that light with him every day of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Darden Baird; his son Doug (Christi) and daughter Grace, his daughter Allison (Charlie) and children Cole, Hunter, and Hadley; stepson, Curtis (Ami) children Jonathan, Cohen, Alexander; his sisters, Linda McIntosh and children Stormy and Brandy and Vicky Edwards (Frank) and children Cade and Brystol; and his brother Troy (Josephine) and children Tee, Hal, Evans, and Josie; along with many cousins and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
He was predeceased by a stepson, Chad Infinger and a brother-in-law, Larry McIntosh.
Robby touched countless lives with his generosity, his laughter, and his willingness to show up whenever anyone was in need. His legacy of love, service and faith will live on in every heart he warmed.
A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at First Harleyville Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hoover officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before the service.
